CONTINUING A LEGACY
The year was 1946; at a tent revival in Bremen, KY. The evangelist was Bro. Garnet Ashby. It was here where Lindel Hinton first encountered Christ and was saved. Four years later, his wife Annette Hinton, gave her heart to Christ at an Assembly of God Church in Owensboro, KY - then pastored by Rev. Wayman Rogers.
Both now saved and later baptized in Pond River, they started traveling with Bro. Ashby singing and proclaiming to others what the Lord had done for them. After 2 or 3 years of evangelizing they started attending Stringtown Pentecostal Church in Stringtown, KY. It was here where Bro. Hinton received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. His wife having received the Baptism earlier while attending a revival at Rev. Ansel Vibert’s church in Evansville, IN.
They stayed in Stringtown for some time, then later attended Rev. James Knight’s church on 7th street in Livermore, KY. It was here where they were asked to be Youth Leaders and Sis. Hinton a Sunday School teacher. After their time at Rev. Knight’s they felt lead to return to Stringtown to help out, now with new experience. In 1963, Bro. Hinton was asked to return back to Livermore to pastor.
The church was located across the street from where it stands today, up on the hill. Some of the pillars who stayed and helped with support include (but not limited to) Bro. Bill Case and family, Glenda Cobb, Vonnie St. Clair, and Sis. Golda Wetzel.
When they first began pastoring, they were living in a new home in Sacramento, KY. However, after one year they moved to Livermore. He later built their house located on HWY 431 which became their life-long home.
When they first arrived at Bethel, only the foundation and the walls were constructed. In the summer of the same year and after much help and many prayers, they had their first service. As the story goes, Bro. Bill Case and Rev. Hinton prayed over every brick while building the church. Two years later (1965) the Sunday School rooms were added. By this time, the congregation was growing tremendously fast and many were coming expecting to receive. Bro. Jimmy Turner came for revival in May of 1968 were Bro. & Sis. Hinton were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. By 1973, Bethel Pentecostal Church was completely bricked.
Although we had a good size church we still felt the need for added space. In 1979, the Outreach Building was built. In January 1981 the church was completely remodeled, again with God’s help and many volunteers. During this 3 ½ month span, we used the Outreach as our sanctuary. On April 10, 1981, Easter Sunday, we were back into our newly remodeled church.
On November 16, 1982 Rev. Hinton opened the doors to a new Christian School. This had been a dream of his for some time. Bethel Christian Academy, located in the Outreach Center, held 18 students, K-12. The school lasted until the late 80's.
We are blessed beyond measure; so much that it is impossible to tell it all. Above all, we are thankful that the Lord has personally handed us such wonderful pastors over the years. Bro. & Sis. Hinton have provided us with a church where we can come together as a church family, to worship Him in Spirit and Truth, and to learn from His word. Let us all stand together, love one another, and continue extending the hand of Christ; for the Lord is still working in, for, and through Bethel Outreach Ministries.
